New Poetry from Award-winning Poet, Kay Cosgrove

Poetry: A Container of the Possible

July 25, 2023 – SANTA FE, NM – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The poems in Kay Cosgrove’s first collection, Anybody Home? are shaped by curiosity—about herself, the world, and her place in it. Witty and elegantly restrained, they ask the question: How do we live the lives we’ve made for ourselves?

Published in dozens of magazines including American Poetry Review and Prairie Schooner, Cosgrove says, “I think of poetry as the container of the possible, for what we want to understand, or examine, or get to know, or can’t say. I love that a poem lets you look hard at an instant…move through it again or for the first time, in ways you didn’t or couldn’t in life.”

In this compelling collection, Cosgrove roams from barrooms to checkout lines to the enigma of motherhood. She is a teenager responsible for a sack-of-flour baby, and then an adult driving a teenage babysitter home. She explores the texture of our connections to strangers, family, and ourselves in poems that illuminate the sublime in the unimportant. The poems in Anybody Home? embrace life’s sweetness and shadows. Here, the ordinary is unfathomable and the ineffable is ordinary; the quotidian gleams within the roiling world.

“A poem holds everything,” says Cosgrove, and her poems do.

Kay Cosgrove, Anybody Home?

At dusk last night I blew the biggest bubble
for my girls. It captured everything:
the black shutters and dead-headed geraniums,

two cars and two girls and a skinny man
pulling weeds – all of it
so hard to see

except when it floats
in a crystal ball
right before your eye.
